Dr Susan Lim’s Academic Milestones
Dr Susan Lim has received several awards and recognition throughout her career including fellowships, scholarships and travel awards
Education And Academic Awards
After receiving the Colombo Plan Scholarship for Medicine at Monash University in Australia, Dr Lim was awarded the David Rosenthal Memorial Prize for achieving the highest combined marks during her pre-clinical years. She graduated with first class honours in medicine from Monash University in 1979. She was awarded the GB Ong Gold Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh for being the most distinguished candidate in General Surgery (shared) for 1983/1984.
With the Churchill College’s Gulbenkian Scholarship, Dr Lim obtained her PhD in Transplantation Immunology at the University of Cambridge. She also received bursaries from the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, and overseas research student merit awards in the UK. The University of Newcastle in Australia presented Dr Lim with an honorary degree in medicine, and the American Academy of Continuing Medical Education presented her with the Dr Arthur L Bloomfield Award of Excellence in Medical Education. The latter was in acknowledgement of her academic contribution during the Arab Health Congress.
Fellowships
Dr Susan Lim was the first person from Singapore and also the youngest person to be installed as a Fellow of Trinity College in Australia.

‘100 Women’ Book
Dr Lim features in ‘100 Women’, a book about female role models. The book contains information about the lives of 100 women who have attained significant accomplishments in their lives. The University of Newcastle launched the book in 2011.
The 28th award by the American Academy of Continuing Medical Education was renamed the ‘Dr Susan Lim Award. This change was made to recognize Dr Lim’s contributions in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

The American Academy of Continuing Medical Education The Dr Mark Hoffman Award
The Committee for Review and Recognition presented Dr Lim with the Dr Mark Hoffman Award. It was given to recognize leadership in graduate medical education.
The Young Investigators Award
She received the Young Investigators Award by the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver at the 9th Biennial Scientific Meeting. The paper was titled, ‘A Predictive Role for Complement in the End Stage Liver Cirrhosis’.
The Best Free Paper Prize
The French Transplant Society presented Dr Lim with the Best Free Paper Prize at the 1st International Congress on Transplantation in Developing Countries. The paper was titled, ‘The MEGX Test as a Measure of Liver Viability In an Isolated Perfusion Circuit’.
The Seah Cheng Siang Memorial Prize
*She received the Seah Cheng Siang Memorial Prize for her paper called, ‘Complement deficiency in liver cirrhosis - observations and applications’. The Best Free Paper prize was awarded at the Singapore and Australia Combined Scientific Meeting of the Gastroenterological Societies.
*She also received the Seah Cheng Siang Memorial Prize for her paper called, ‘Extracorporeal Hepatic Support System - Research Aspects’. The Best Free Paper in Gastroenterology prize was awarded to Dr Lim at the Singapore and Malaysia Combined Scientific Meeting of the Gastroenterological Societies.
Travel Awards
Dr Lim Received Several Travel Awards Including:
• The Young Surgeons Travel Award from the Japan Surgical Society, at the Organisation's 93rd Annual Congress.
• Ethicon Foundation Travel Award from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, to travel to the USA to study islet cell and pancreas transplantation.
• International Transplantation Society Travel Award, to attend the Transplantation Society Meeting in the US.
• Sandoz Travel Award, to attend a Transplantation Congress in the US.
• British Society for Immunology Travel Award, to attend events such as the 3rd International Pancreatic and Islet Cell Transplantation Congress in France, and the Transplantation Society Meeting in Australia. The British Transplantation Society and the Wellcome Trust also awarded Dr Lim with a travel award to attend this meeting.
She was also given a traveling fellowship to Minneapolis in the United States by the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, with the aim of observing pancreas and islet cell transplantation under Professors John Najarian and David Sutherland.
